About Us
Our Legacy: Crafted Through Generations
Coats by Mary Ellen is a proud second- and third-generation family business, rooted in the timeless art of tailoring. Our story began nearly 80 years ago in the small town of Curinga, Catanzaro, Italy, where our founder, Elia Pizzonia, began apprenticing under Master Tailor Mastro Leo at the young age of eight. With unwavering dedication and passion, Elia became a master tailor, setting the foundation for a legacy of craftsmanship.
In 1960, Elia immigrated to Niagara Falls, Canada, bringing with him a wealth of knowledge, skill, and a dream: to create exceptional outerwear for Canadians using traditional European artisanal methods. He quickly established himself in Toronto’s garment industry, working with renowned manufacturers such as Hannah Ladies Wear, Roth Stern, and Lindzon, while also offering couture services to private clients from his home.
Elia’s talent and leadership earned him a foreman position at Dylex/Tip Top Tailors, and in 1982, he founded Coats by Mary Ellen, named in honour of his daughter Mary and wife Elena. Located on Spadina Avenue in Toronto’s historic Fashion District, the atelier became a hub for skilled artisans and a symbol of quality and style.
Today, the Pizzonia family proudly continues Elia’s legacy, offering both local and international clients a personalized alternative to traditional coat shopping. Whether ready-to-wear or bespoke, every garment reflects our commitment to craftsmanship, heritage, and timeless design.
