Frequently Asked Questions
Where are your coats made?
Our coats are meticulously crafted in Toronto from start to finish. The design, cutting, sewing, and finishing processes all take place in-house at 951 Wilson Avenue, Unit 19, Toronto, Ontario. No outsourcing or third parties.
I have a Coat that is worn out but I really love the style, can you recreate the pattern?
Yes, if you have a coat that you really love the style of but is unwearable we can recreate the pattern and (if you want) make any changes to that pattern. You will have the freedom to choose which fabric, type of lining, buttons and much more. Price will depend on the complexity of the style and your selection of fabric.
What is the Custom Made Process?
If there is a style you like, we will work with you to create a unique handcrafted piece. You select the style, fabric, lining buttons and any other features. We will do the rest. The process will take about 3-4 weeks. We recommend one to two fittings but not always necessary. The cost will depend on your selection and details. If you choose to custom-make a piece from our collection on our website, a good guideline to how much it will cost is to add on 25% to the regular price.
How is Coats by Mary Ellen outerwear different than any other?
When you visit our showroom, you also enter the world in which our outerwear is made. You get real sense connection to how and where they are made that you would not otherwise get anywhere else.
At Coat by Mary Ellen, we pride ourselves on handcrafting and creating pieces that are not mass produced. We will cut styles in various sizes and colours in small amounts. In our showroom, we offer ready made and bespoke.
We hand select all our fabrics from Italy and other European countries and create pieces that will stand the test of time, look good and keep you warm, because as we like to say "only Canadians understand Canadian winters." We design, and create our outerwear in the traditional way. What we mean by that is that most wool coats made nowadays are not properly lined, leaving you feeling that cold Canadian winter chill. Our outerwear provides premium fabric for the shell, satin lining, cotton flannel backing, wool fusing in the front panels and a genuine suede chamois. The chamois is sewn into the back of the lining and its purpose is to stop the cold winter wind from hitting your back.
